MALTA : Overview

OVERVIEW

Malta, known as the “heart of the Mediterranean,”is one of Europe’s most densely populated countries. The island is much like an “open-air-museum” sprinkled with ancient structures from the past. Even though Malta is full of old buildings and historical places, the country has been working hard to restructure their wheelchair accessible transportation system and construct new buildings for people who utilize mobility devices to assist with accessible travel.

LANGUAGE

The official language of Malta is Maltese, and English is also spoken.

CURRENCY

BUS

Transport Malta: “Presently, the vehicles which are Wheelchair Accessible are limited to the Scheduled Route Transport Service and the Tail Lift Vans. The Scheduled Route Transport Service is considered to be one of the most important transport sectors in Malta since it provides a transport service around Malta. This service is provided by a fleet of 508 buses, of which 132 buses are of the low floor type and accessible to Wheel Chair users. The Tail Lift Vans are operated by various private companies in Malta and can be easily booked through one of these companies. A transport reform is currently in progress and in the coming months, all Route Buses will be changed to low floor buses and will be accessible to Wheel Chair users.” Sabrina, 3/30/2010

Note that since all buses in Malta are not all currently wheelchair accessible, with the lowered floor and ramp, it’s difficult to determine when the next accessible bus will arrive for pick up. The ATP website should be able to give you more information on accessible bus times.

Here is a link to show you what the current buses look like in Malta. There is also a photo of their wheelchair accessible bus on this website.
