AIR TRANSPORTATION/AIRPORT

Victoria International Airport (YYJ): The airport has multiple levels which are accessible via elevator, and has many other modern features. The restrooms are equipped with wheelchair accessible stalls and companion bathrooms also exist. Boarding the plane is made easy via Jet Bridge. Prior to your flight, passengers should contact their airline to arrange special assistance if required.

“Very well organized airport, all staff well trained and can handle even complicated requests (Stretcher wheelchair transportation, ventilators and oxygen handling). Some of the smaller commuter planes do have stairs, but again, the Ground crew is competent and can manage most things. My only warning (and this would be for taking a flight anywhere is to take as much as you can off a wheelchair going into the hold, (headrests, footrests etc) baggage handlers not known for being gentle with EXPENSIVE equipment.” Alex, 9/15/10

OVERVIEW

Montreal, Quebec, is a town rich with history and European influence. Because its inhabitants speak French, it adds an extra exotic twist to a visit. We have visited multiple times and have found Montreal to be fairly accessible to the physically challenged traveler.

AIR TRANSPORTATION/AIRPORT

Montreal Trudeau offers convenient access to Montreal. We have always driven to Montreal, so cannot comment on the accessibility of the airport.

GROUND TRANSPORTATION

TAXI

Multiple taxi services in Montreal provide wheelchair accessible rides. Wheelchair accessible cabs can be reserved 1 hour in advance at any time of the day or year. Here are some companies that provide this service: Diamond Taxi (514-273-6331), Expert Taxi (514-374-7171), Van Médic Taxi (514-739-9933), Rosemont Taxi (514-255-2815), and Taxi Excellence (514-322-0909). Make sure to call ahead to verify the company you wish to use is still in business and has wheelchair cabs for hire.

Location Jean Legare: This company has wheelchair accessible mini vans equipped with a ramp for rent. We have not used this company, as we have always driven to Montreal in our own wheelchair accessible van.

HOTELS

Sofitel Montreal Hotel: On multiple visits to Montreal, we have always stayed at the Sofitel. We favor this hotel because it is centrally located downtown, and it is very accessible. The rooms are large, and the bathrooms are easy to maneuver.

ACTIVITIES

Casino de Montreal: The casino is a popular attraction in Montreal, and is situated on the Île Notre-Dame. The casino offers every standard game, including slot machines, craps, black jack, and roulette. We don’t believe that the casino has a poker room. We have found the casino to be very wheelchair accessible, and it even has lower tables to accommodate players in chairs. The casino also offers valet parking, which was free at the time we visited, making a visit very easy.

Montreal Botanical Gardens: The Botanical Gardens, located across the street from the Montreal Olympic Stadium, are a great way to relax and enjoy a summer afternoon. The gardens are largely accessible, but some paths are dirt, and there are areas with steps. There is also a Biodome, Insectarium, and Planetarium on the premises. We visited the Insectarium – despite it being two levels, it is wheelchair accessible, as it has an elevator.

Old Montreal: Old Montreal is a beautifully preserved section of town, with grand stone buildings and cobblestone streets. Surprisingly, some of the buildings and restaurants are wheelchair accessible. If you are in a scooter or a wheelchair, beware that the sections of Old Montreal paved with cobblestones can be very challenging to traverse. Despite its challenges, Old Montreal is still very worth the visit.

RESTAURANTS/NIGHTLIFE

Montreal is a city comprised of buildings of different ages. As such, many of the restaurants and nightclubs are not wheelchair accessible. On more than one occasion, we either could not join friends at a location, or had to go through a maze of kitchens and back elevators for access. Crescent Street is one example of a Montreal hot spot that is great fun for people watching. We were able to find a table street-side at the Hard Rock Café, even though the restaurant itself was not accessible.

AIR TRANSPORTATION/AIRPORT

The Toronto Pearson International Airport offers convenient access to Toronto.

“Re: Airpost assistance…If you call Toronto International Airport in advance they will arrange to meet you at the curb or when you are de-planing. This is very helpful if you are travelling alone or need someone to push you while your companion carries the luggage.” Lindylou, 6/24/11

GROUND TRANSPORTATION

“Toronto has the most liberal (and abused) parking laws I’ve ever seen. When I was still driving I was extremely grateful. If you contact Service Ontario they can you to where you can obtain a copy of your parking with a permit rights.” Lindylou, 6/24/11

City Taxi: City Taxi offers a “range” of wheelchair accessible vehicles. To book, call their dispatchers at the phone number listed on the link.

“Almost all companies including Beck, Royal and Co-op can provide wheelchair accessible vans. It is best to give 24 hr. notice. Also, they all have a hefty minimum of $30-35.” Lindylou, 6/24/11

HOTELS

Best Western Fireside Hotel: On our visit to Niagara Falls, we stayed at the Best Western Fireside Hotel. Our room was accessible, and there was an elevator to our floor. Note that this hotel is located a bit too far from the falls for individuals with mobility limitations. We drove over to the falls and parked on our visit.

ACTIVITIES

Horseshoe Falls: The Horseshoe Falls are an amazing site to see in person. The sheer volume of water passing over the falls is simply impressive. Obviously, the falls are free to observe and you can stay as long as you like. In the evening, the falls are illuminated by colored lights, adding a different dimension to the experience. On the Canadian side, the sidewalk along the falls is bordered by a waist-high stone fence that is capped with a railing. If you are unable to stand or elevate, you may have trouble viewing the falls from the railing. My electric chair elevates vertically, so I was able to elevate and see them pretty well.

Maid of the Mist: This boat tour will allow you to get personally kissed by the falls – literally! The tour motors up the Niagara River straight to the base of the Horseshoe Falls. According to the Maid of the Mist website, the tour is wheelchair accessible. Because I am in a motorized chair, I did not want to chance getting the electronics wet.

Journey Behind the Falls: This attraction allows you to go behind the falls and experience the thunderous roar of the falls up close. According to the website, this tour is wheelchair accessible, except for the lower level observation deck, which is reached by stairs.

White Water Walk: Located a few miles upstream of the falls, the White Water Walk is a boardwalk that runs along a section of intense whitewater rapids. According to the website, the majority of the boardwalk is wheelchair accessible. There are two small areas that have stairs that allow closer access, which are not wheelchair accessible.

RESTAURANTS/NIGHTLIFE

Niagara Falls has many accessible restaurants and nightclubs. We ate at a place right across from the casino, and it had an elevator to the 2nd floor, where there was outdoor seating on the rooftop deck. While the name escapes me at the moment, it was a stones throw from the IMAX Theater.
