AIR TRANSPORTATION/AIRPORT

Princess Juliana International Airport, located west of Philipsburg, offers convenient access to the island of Sint Maarten. We always accessed the island via cruise ship, so cannot comment on the accessibility of the airport.

CRUISE PORT

Philipsburg has a large dock capable of accommodating multiple cruise ships at one time. Small tenders are available to transport individuals directly from the terminal to the town, however, they are not accessible for travelers dependent on electric wheelchairs. Luckily, the town is a short distance away from the cruise terminal, and is easily reached via paved walking path that follows the road.

“We docked at Dr. A.C. Wathey Cruise or St.Maarten Harbour, was able drive wheelchair directly onto gangway from ship to large width and length pier, many of the shops at the port were small, but very friendly staff, not willing to bargain on sale of item, very clean port.” Wayne, 12/14/2011

PRECAUTIONS

The city of Philipsburg is about a one mile walk from the cruise terminal. The Caribbean can get quite hot, and one can easily overheat while wandering through the streets and shops of Philipsburg. Be mindful that there is little shade on the walk between the cruise terminal and the city, and bring plenty of fluids to stay hydrated and cool.
